dance as a way of knowing: interview with Alva Noë

Embodied Techne Series

Marlon Barrios Solano interviewed the philosopher of Alva Noë in his brief visit to NYC. He explains his line of inquiry on perception and action and why dance (and human movement) is relevant for the understanding of cognition. He also talks about his experience with the Lisa Nelson's "Tunning Scores" joint workshop and how certain approaches to dance training and composition can collaborate with science and philosophy in generating knowledge from an embodied perspective.
He is the author of the book "Action

Playing The Building: An Installation by David Byrne

I visited today, in the south tip of Manhattan an interesting public art project: "Playing The Building: An Installation by David Byrne". From the website: Playing the building is a sound installation in which the infrastructure, the physical plant of the building, is converted into a giant musical instrument. Devices are attached to the building structure ? to the metal beams and pillars, the heating pipes, the water pipes ? and are used to make these things produce sound. The activations are of three types: wind, vibration, striking. The devices do not produce sound themselves, but they cause the building elements to vibrate, resonate and oscillate so that the building itself becomes a very large musical instrument. http://www.davidbyrne.com/art/art_projects/playing_the_building/index.php Production Team 2008: Production Manager: Mark McNamara; Systems Engineer & Head of Fabrication: Justin Downs; Fabrication: Brett van Aalsburg, Eric Singer; Crew: Nick Emmett, Eric Dyer Cool detail: Within the visitors this afternoon, there were the architects Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio from Diller Scofidio + Renfro, creators of the Blur Building and the stage design of the piece Moving Target. http://www.dillerscofidio.com/moving-target.html

HOLA!
My name is Marlon Barrios Solano, I am the network creator and producer.

It is conceived as an international network that aggregates and facilitates the flow of information and the distributed intelligence among movement, new media artist and theorists working in the confluence of embodied performance, science and new media.

Create, connect, publish, discuss, ask questions, upload photos and videos...Collaborate!

It is free...and you make it happen..I

Join with your real or artistic name...as an individual or an organization!

Using the most advanced social software platforms and internet rich multimedia applications, dance-tech.net is geared to help movement artist's and technologist from all over the world to develop interdisciplinary and collaborative projects exploring the impact of important changes in the technology and media landscape.

dance-tech.net states that dance is relevant and always happens within technological environments. I am interested in "PROCESS" and the ways in which movement arts are practiced and how its understanding might create important epistemological changes relevant for our perspectives on humanness.

dance-tech.net is always observing the close relationship between movement practices, emerging new media technologies and the organizational cultural context.

Sharing, collaboration and collective intelligence are the core values that propel dance-tech.net towards experiments of distributed creativity (as always has been) using the world wide web as the medium for exchange and experimentation of sustainable artistic/research practices.

dance-tech.net mission is to foster an ecological and systemic perspective of creative interaction that is instantiated with:

_a community of practice using social networking technology in this site
_video podcasts with interviews with relevant artists, technologists, producers and theorists. I hope that they respond to the "pulse" of the field and generate further development. The podcasts live in the video section of dance-tech.net producer and in the dance-tech.net podcasts channel http://dancetechnet.blip.tv/, In the Fall 2008 dance-tech.net/The Show will be distributed by tendu.tv the first broadband internet TV channel.

Espero tomemos contacto...
Saludos y suerte!!

Hi Marlon,

Thanks a lot for your message. I am so happy that I found this network -- it is so dense and rich! I think I might need to set myself some maximum time limits while browsing around...

Thanks for sending the links to the podcasts - I do find the interview with Robert Wechsler thought-provoking - he certainly does have a broad experience with the use of technology in performances. Lisa Nelson's approach in which she combines practice, research and teaching is something I will need to take some more time to explore and think through. Will get back to you as soon as I have formulated some 'intelligent' remarks...

Take care,
Annabel
