Moss also points out “a weird trend in New York for making a simulacrum of the original.” As an example he mentions the cult punk bar CBGB, once the “home of underground rock”, where Patti Smith, Blondie, Talking Heads and The Ramones have all performed. The venue closed in 2006 and was eventually bought by the high-end men’s fashion designer, John Varvatos, who turned it into a boutique.

  • Rhizome | Interview with Brody Condon
Case (2009), conceived and produced by artist Brody Condon, will be a day-long installation and performance that, in the artist’s words combines “Gibson’s 1980s dystopian techno-fetishism with faux ‘virtual reality’ scenes that will unfold via moving Bauhaus-inspired sculptural props accompanied by the Gamelan ensemble Dharma Swara.” I asked Condon a few questions in advance of the New York premiere so readers, near and far, could get a sense of how this ambitious work will unfold on Sunday.

I first thought Princen's photograph was fake. How could this be real? Looking online for the location of the photo, Mokattam, i discovered the image is authentic. - THE PIECE: «Woman-Bomb» by the Croatian playwright Ivana Sajko is the monologue of a female suicide bomber, who reflects in the last minutes before the explosion of the bomb not only her action, but her circumstances that lead her to this action. Based on this text, Director and Perfomer Sanja Ristic, conceived and staged a rock concert combined with dance and theatre. The musical and aesthetic form of expression that is used in musical theatre reflects the emotional and excessive condition of this woman immediately before her action and follows the radical emotional world of the female suicide bomber. - PRESS: Sanja Ristic and her team succeeded in bringing enormous emotional sensitivities on stage and managed to avoid clichés without losing the appropriate seriousness that is required for the subject. Protect me from myself is a performance that stirs emotions and grabs you. It is in the mix: Silence and self-reflexive moments in which the suicide remembers her past are set against excessive dance scenes, songs and dynamic musical intermezzi. Still the fast show with this serious subject never sinks to arbitrary or befriending concernment. Protect me from myself abstains from any moral values. The inner life of the possibly prototypical female suicide bomber stays a fragment and is presented to the audience only in extracts. It is obvious that the performance leaves many questions. How else would it be possible to deal with this subject?
