Julia Griffin, is a freelance dance artist operating in the UK and Europe with extensive knowledge and experience in teaching, performing and choreographing contemporary dance and dance for camera film works. She has collaborated with various artists, dance companies, theatre practitioners, vocational and academic institutions in the UK and Europe.
A graduate from Middlesex University with a BA (Hons) in Performing Arts, a Special Certificate in Choreography and Performance from London Contemporary Dance School and an MA in Media Arts from Manchester Metropolitan University. Previous collaborative work with artists include Stephen Petronio, Emilyn Claid, David Massingham, Earl Lloyd Hepburn, Siobhan Davies, Hans Tuerling, the late Lea Parkinson, Penny Arcade, Wendy Houston, Julie Tollentino, Katherine Dawson, Pete Purdy, Lawrence Turnball, Rachel Davies, Ruth Gibson and Bruno Martelli (Igloo ‘Swanquake’), Guy Hilton and the late Jeremy James.
She has performed and worked with Gestures Dance Company, Swamp Circus, Gorgeous Dance Company, Common Ground Sign Dance Theatre, Glee Club, Sensa Tempo, Twisted Collision Dance Theatre, Siobhan Davies Dance Company, Red Ladder Theatre CO, Robert Hylton, Stark Dancers and Axial Dance.
Her performance, choreographic and film work has been seen on BBC 1 (‘OK 2 TALK FEELINGS’), The Big Screen, part of The Cornerhouse initiative ‘The Bigger Picture’ (‘Ran out of Credit’ and ‘The Binsons’), MTV (Rachel MacFarlane and Lucid) Moves 07 Festival (‘Golden Day Waltzing’), The Cornerhouse (‘The Assembly’), Commonwealth Film Festival (Swan), BBC's 10x10: (‘NIGHTFRONTIER’), Granada T.V Best of the Fest and Manchester International Arts (Sensa Tempo and the Penny Arcade Show) and TWISTED COLLISION'S award winning 'TREADING WATER', which was given by VIDEO POSITIVE in 1995 and can be viewed at FACT in Liverpool and also as an online resource. She was the only UK choreographer selected for ‘The Migrant Body Project’ involving five countries, five selected choreographers and 10 international dancers in 2007.
