Dance Films Association offers Dance Film Lab and more!

"As a first-time filmmaker, the resources and opportunities offered by DFA were incredibly helpful. First, through the Dance Film Lab I was able to get feedback from my peers on editing my film. Then I was lucky enough to receive DFA Post Production funding to complete the film. Through an article I wrote for the DFA's Dance on Camera Journal, I shared my process with others. Finally, I submitted the finished work, TOGETHER: DANCING WITH SPINNER DOLPHINS, which was selected for screening…See More

Dance Films Association, Inc. was founded in 1956 as a 501-C-3 membership nonprofit by Susan Braun to showcase dance films. She nurtured collaborations between two dynamic art forms–dance and film. Her vision was to foster the creation and dissemination of films ranging from short experimental works to feature-length documentaries. DFA’s main goal was, and still is, to encourage choreographers to enter the world of filmmaking, for filmmakers to discover the rich history of dance, and for audiences to engage with the broad spectrum of these films. Today, DFA’s membership is close to 700, encompassing dance professionals, filmmakers, universities, and audience members.

Braun’s vision led to the creation of the first dance on camera film festival in 1971, which fostered creativity and encouraged collaborations between dancers and filmmakers. DFA's annual Dance On Camera Festival presents exciting new dance films as well as offering retrospectives of important works. DOCF has become a mecca for artists, curators, and scholars to see work and share ideas. The Film Society of Lincoln Center, in 1997, one year after the death of Braun, joined DFA as the festival's co-producer. This partnership together with DFA’s track record has led to an increase in film submissions to over 250. DFA started touring selected films from the festival nationally in 1999, and internationally in 2000, bringing rarely seen work to diverse communities. The DOCF Touring Program now has over 100 touring partners.
