DanceDigital is a regional dance development agency with a national focus on Dance and Technology and is based in Chelmsford in the East of England. Founded in 1988 by Fern Potter, essexdance was conceived as a regional dance development agency to improve standards in dance education and training in Essex. In 1997, essexdance began its specialisation in Dance and Technology receiving a grant in 2002 from the Regional Arts Lottery Programme to develop the use of motion capture in dance. In 2005 essexdance merged with Herts Dance to form Dance in Herts and increase its output over 2 counties. In 2007, the organisation began its transformation into DanceDigital, setting up the Create Dance Studio to facilitate artistic exchange and build on our long-standing legacy. In recent years, DanceDigital has transformed itself to the only national organisation in the UK specialising in the development of dance and technology. Our artistic programme has supported over 150 choreographers through a range of commissions, residencies, bursaries, professional training and an associate artist scheme.
DanceDigital works to develop technological literacy of dance professionals, artists, educators, students, pupils and community members. With digital culture as an intrinsic part of the everyday, digital literacy is essential to full civic participation and to the development of new services and businesses. We develop technological expertise that advances dance as an art form and use the art form of dance to develop technological literacy applicable across a broad range of learning and professional contexts. Our work has inter-disciplinary impact and aims to catalyse community cohesion, creativity and development. Our work reaches artists, scientists, computer programmers, software developers, students, teachers and community groups. DanceDigital’s mission is to catalyse the development of new choreographies in digital environments. By hybridizing the ancient form of dance with cutting edge innovations in technology, we seek to provide the public with compelling artistic experiences that touch both heart and mind. We see our role to be the connective tissue between choreographic innovation and vibrant civic engagement, bringing together artists, audiences and participants in inspiring artistic activities.
We offer opportunities for creative exploration, innovation, performance and product development. We support artists and technologists in the development of new work that offers innovative high quality experiences in performance and cultural activity. We invest in the development of new ideas that make contributions to and enrich the sustainability of art, culture, society and the environment, locally, regionally, nationally, and where appropriate, internationally.
