Beech trees - among the most stately and valued of the "old trees" (found also in the sacred groves with oak, rowan and ash) - usually are seen most mature in protected enclaves like Glenstal Abbey.
This group was spared the ax and guards a cloistered courtyard, hidden from easy view.
