Hi Rob, this is great stuff, but who are the two people in the chat? best Jeannette
hi Jeanette - thanks - the two people in the theater chat are Elena Panayotova, Bulgarian theater director [e] and myself [r] -
i am interested in how the body communicates through movement and i would be happy to hear from anyone who has thoughts on this?
my own work the past twenty years has given me reason to understand that there are many underlying agreed-upon codes which are - consciously or unconsciously - communicated between dancer and viewer - for example codes about 'choreography' like simultaneity, clear beginnings and ends of gesture, ease of movement, the rhetorical and the demonstrative stance, reliance on grounded balance, etc. - which provoke a judgmental or interpretive response in the viewer -
my performances, classes and workshops investigate these and other topics through a process of elimination - trying to arrive at a place where interpretation becomes more and more difficult and the distance between audience and performer is so-to-speak collapsed -
with my blog i hope to write in more detail about these ideas - as well as including quotes from a number of sources and posts from friends of mine in the performance and dance fields - the title of the blog is from the great Noh theater progenitor Zeami who wrote about some of these ideas over 6 centuries ago -
